Burford
Burford,
8 miles north of Lechlade,
is a beautiful Cotswold town on the river Windrush which grew to
be an important crossroads for travellers and a very wealthy wool
town and has always been considered to be the gateway to the Cotswolds.
|
|
The
broad main street, High Street, slopes gently down to the river
Windrush ("ford" was the Anglo Saxon word for "river
crossing") and is lined with old Cotswold Stone houses
and cottages. It is a very dignified street and many of the
shops and buildings appear to have changed very little for hundreds
of years.
|
There
are many little side streets to explore and refreshments can be
had at the many old pubs and tea rooms in the town. Antique shops
are a common feature of the town.
Today
it is extremely popular with visitors to the area and can get quite
busy in the summer.
The
15th century parish church of St. John Baptist is a magnificent
sight and is another sign of bygone riches based on wool in
common with many other towns and villages in the area. The
church was originally Norman, but it was remodelled in the
fifteenth century.

House Hotel, Burford
A 17th century landmark on the High Street, it is now, if
you believe what you read and hear, one of the most highly
regarded small hotels in the lovely Cotswolds, one of Britains
most outstandingly beautiful areas.
We
are helped by a small team of enthusiastic and caring local
staff most of whom have been with us for quite a while and
between us we aim to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere,
really good bedrooms and bathrooms and the best breakfasts,
light lunches and afternoon teas.
